An einen ?dear Lord?, der sich für die Ode ?Timotheus? des englischen Dichters und Dramatikers John Dryden interessiert hatte: ?[...] To Bayle I naturally turned; & the passage which I suspect has already engaged your Lordship?s attention, is herewith enclosed. On returning home, I tried various ways to discover the authority for Timotheus?s magic skill: but no authority to be found in any books of mine at all came up to that purpose. One date is important. Dryden?s Ode was written in 1697. Bayle?s Dictionary appeared in 1696. The Poet might therefore as being Master of the French language have read that article in Bayle, from which I have given the Extract inclosed in its English dress. But as Dryden would hardly read Greek originals, so we must look for his information at any rate in some author translated before the year 1697 or in some book before that date published. Not possessing Plutarch?s Moralia so called, I must consult Wyttenbach?s edition in the British Museum [...]?. ? Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt.
