First edition. A historical treatise on the commerce and trade of the Dutch Republic, the causes of its prosperity in the past, the reasons for its present decline, and the means for recovery. Most bibliographers attribute this book to the French lawyer Accarias de Serionne (1709-92), an opponent of the ideas of the philosophers and the Physiocrats. It has, however, also been attributed to the Dutch jurist, philosopher and bookseller Elie Luzac (1723-96) who published a Dutch book (Hollands rijkdom, 1780) which was only nominally a translation of the present French work. In the preface to the Dutch adaptation, Luzac wrote that he wished to demonstrate "in which way [...] such a book should be treated [...] even more so because [...] so many had thought him [Luzac] for the author of this [French] book'. First edition. A comprehensive work on commerce in all its aspects: the commerce of the European nations, public credit, banking, accounting, population, currency, the effects of the abundance of gold and silver, the Indian companies, commercial law and practice, bankruptcy, speculation, bills of exchange, etc. The French lawyer Accaria (1709-92) lived in Holland, where most of his works were published anonymously. He is known as an opponent of the ideas of the French philosophers and the Physiocrats. Though the second edition published the following year in four ducodecimo volumes is quite common, this first edition, in quarto, is scarce. - Label of second volume gone, bindings a bit rubbed and minor imperfection at foot of first volume. Erwähnt sei ferner der Pharmazeut O. C. Blandow (gest. 1810) aus Malchin, der als Student eine ganzseitige Deckfarbenminiatur beigetragen hat: Dargestellt sind zwei Botaniker beim Pflanzensammeln im Wald und auf der Wiese, darüber das Motto: "O botanicae reficientis!" - Leicht gebräunt und fleckig.

First edition of the peace treaty between the Netherlands and Algiers on 23 November 1757 (or 12 Rabi' al-awwal of the year 1171, the Prophet's birthday), which ended a war that had lasted since 1755. After the War of Spanish Succession had left the Dutch navy neglected and their merchant fleet large and vulnerable, the corsairs of the Barbary states had begun a series of attacks on Dutch ships. Already the only major naval power to pay tribute to Algiers (under a 1679 treaty), the Netherlands increased their payments to bring about by diplomacy the peace they were unable to enforce by military means. While Algiers had agreed to the peace in 1726 (and the Dutch made new treaties with Tunis and Tripoli), relationships remained tense. The Netherlands were required to send large annual amounts of gunpowder, arms, and naval stores, and "occasionally, if the demands of the Barbary corsairs became too excessive, the Dutch would fight back. They were at war with Algiers from 1755 to 1757 and 1792 to 1793, and with Tripoli from 1789 to 1791. However, in the end peace would once more be concluded. Payment of tribute was always cheaper than maintaining a naval squadron in the Mediterranean for years on end" (Jamieson, Lords of the Sea: A History of the Barbary Corsairs [2012], p. 179). - The present copy is a new issue with an added final leaf (and blank leaf) containing three additional articles appended in 1760.

Only edition of "considerably rare little work" (cf. Saffroy) in connection with the great project of re-establishing the brotherhood of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre. Includes a history of the order as well as its statutes and a list of the knights active between 1740 and 1815. - The history of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre is a complex one, involving several attempts at institutionalization as well as competition in the form of confraternities since the Middle Ages. The order founded by St Louis in 1254 lasted until 1792, and included as ex-officio members several Princes of the Blood. From 1814, the Count Allemand, general administrator of the Order of Malta for France, worked to revive the brotherhood: he obtained an informal approval from Louis XVIII, but saw his efforts foiled by the opposition of Chateaubriand. - The title of general administrator, which Allemand bore at the time of the publication of the work, has been stricken from his name in ink (on the title-page as well as on pp. XI, 1 and 199) by a hand indicating his successor, Count Jacques-Louis-François Delaistre de Tilly, an officer of the Ancien Régime who became a general of the Empire. Tilly's name and title are added by hand at the bottom of the list of knights (p. 201). - Slight foxing to velin stock. A fine copy in a charming, richly gilt luxury binding. Very rare contemporary account of the 1849 siege of Timisoara, then part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The town was besieged by Hungarian revolutionary forces rebelling against the Austrian regime. Ambrozy György (1807-67), a Hungarian historian and representative of the Temes county, gives his own detailed testimony of the incident, also describing the preliminary events leading up to the siege, which was broken by Russian forces after three months. Today, Timisoara is the capital of Timis County in Romania. - The author's name is supplied to the title-page in pencil. Some underlinings and markings, somewhat brownstained throughout.
